Evaluation has the power to be a lens that transforms the way we see the world. As evaluators, as people, we wear many lenses that shape what we see and how we focus our vision. Our theme Through the Lens invites you to think about how our lenses help us to reflect on different ways of knowing to inform our theory and practice; to refract our knowledge and learning in ways that enable us to embrace diversity in our communities; as well as to refocus on the future and deliver evaluative insights that resonate.

In 2023 delegates and presenters are meeting face-to-face in Brisbane, Australia. Come along to share, network, and learn about what is happening in evaluation, and evaluation-related fields, in Australia, New Zealand, the Australasian region, and across the world.

First Nations Peoples of Australia focused presentations 

In line with the AES First Nations Cultural Safety Framework, we are committed to supporting Australian First Nations Peoples to strengthen and build their evaluation capacity at aes23 and action our commitment to culturally safe evaluation theory, practice and use. The AES strongly encourages Australian First Nations-focused presentations and papers to be delivered by and with Australian First Nations people wherever possible. We encourage non-Indigenous presenters to refer to the AES First Nations Cultural Safety Framework to guide you when writing your submission, and include this in your justification statement. 

We honour and celebrate Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing in evaluation; and welcome Australian First Nations evaluators to share their voices and perspectives at aes23.

Face-to-face conference

All presentations will be delivered face-to-face and delegates will be able to network with colleagues in person.

Proposal submission deadline dates

Conference workshop proposals: close on 27 February 2023
Conference presentation proposals: close on 20 March 2023
Ignite presentations: close on 20 March 2023

It is your responsibility to meet these deadlines. The Australian Evaluation Society cannot be held responsible for errors caused by internet service outages, hardware or software delays, power outages or unforeseen events.

Conference and workshop presenters will be notified of acceptance during May 2023.

Conference registration requirement for final acceptance on the program

  • The 2023 conference is being held face-to-face in Brisbane, Australia.
  • All conference presenters must register, and pay, for at least the day they are presenting (and every other day they are attending the conference).
  • To ensure that an accepted presentation (and its abstract) is included in the final program at least one presenter must register by 7 July 2023. All presenters must be registered by 31 July 2023.

Note: Agreement to this requirement is a condition of submitting a conference presentation proposal.

Interested in reviewing conference proposals or ignite presentations?

Expressions of interest close Monday 15 March 2023

We are seeking your assistance to review the conference proposals. The call for conference proposals closes on 15 March 2023. If you volunteer, you will need to review the proposals from late March 2023. There is a two-week deadline for review.

This year’s conference proposals review will be a double-blind review. This means that author identities are concealed from the reviewers, and vice versa, throughout the review process. The review process is fully automated and anonymous. You will be provided with instructions to guide your review when using the online assessment tool. Reviewers' names will be published in the conference abstract book.
